WALTHAM, Mass. — A college student died and 26 other people, including the driver, were injured late Saturday when a bus returning from a college hockey game struck a tree in a suburban Boston city, authorities said.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan confirmed to WFTX-TV that the crash in Waltham involved a shuttle bus that was transporting 27 students from Brandeis University after the game, which was held at Northeastern University. The bus was near Brandeis University when the crash occurred, authorities said.
According to a preliminary report, the bus crashed at approximately 10:32 p.m. EST, the television station reported. The driver and the other 26 students on board the vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals, Ryan said.
The student died at the scene, according to The Associated Press.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and police have not identified any of the victims, WFXT reported. No charges have been filed.
“Brandeis has notified students, faculty and staff of the accident,” Brandeis University Assistant Vice President Julie Jette told the television station. “We are providing counseling and support to students and will continue to do so over the coming days.”
In a statement Sunday morning, university officials said that 17 of the injured passengers had been released from hospitals and the others have been admitted, according to The Associated Press.
“Given the number of injured people and the different hospitals to which they were transported, it is taking time to determine the status of everyone involved, including which passengers are Brandeis students,” the statement said.
